12 ideas for fabulous feature walls

Add wow factor to your walls with a bold pattern, a work of art or a clever storage solution. Feature walls are no longer just about one wall of colour, the opportunities to express yourself are endless. Here are some great ideas to try.

Frame your favourites

This is a neat alternative to a pin board - a wallpaper with a frame design that allows you to show off as many of your favourite postcards and pictures as you like. Perfectly inspiring for a study or home office, or as a creative wall where kids can draw in the frames.

Frames wallpaper, £25 per roll, Graham & Brown.

Colour code your shelves

Give your shelves or alcoves a contemporary twist and paint them with blocks of bright colour. You could even allocate a colour to each member of the family for their own display.

Shelves painted in Caramel Sands 5, Summer Surprise 4 and Hawaiian Blue 6, £19.49 for 2.5 litres, walls painted in Absolute White, £20.49 for 2.5 litres, all Dulux.

Extra wide wallpaper

Wallpaper favourite Harlequin has added extra wide wallpapers (measuring 68.6cm) to its collection, meaning that with one roll, you can easily add an eye-catching design to your alcoves. Try hanging the roll down the centre of a plain wall, and use accessories in co-ordinating colours to draw it into the room.

Miya 30516, £44 per roll, Harlequin.

British trend

The popularity for all things British is still going strong in interiors, so give your visitors something to talk about with a life-size retro telephone box wall sticker.

Paint traditional mouldings

Make a show of your wallpaper with traditional mouldings painted in a dramatic colour. This combination is a great solution if you've fallen in love with an expensive wallpaper and can't afford to cover a large space.

Wallpaper is Persian Tulip TRA07004, £85 per roll, Zoffany. Mouldings available from large DIY stores.

Hang empty ornate frames

A contemporary way of hanging picture frames is to have nothing in the frame at all. Choose an ornate frame and hang it empty against patterned wallpaper, or a wall painted in a block colour, to create a curious talking point.

Shape up your shelves

With wall units in different shapes, you can turn any combination of shelving into a work of art. Hang dark shelves like these on a wall painted in a contrasting colour for maximum impact.

Create a stencil headboard

There's no need to splash out on an expensive headboard when you create a wall design yourself. A wall stencil will frame your bed and it's easy to change when you want a new look.

Walls painted in Lupin Matt Emulsion, £15.99 for 2.5 litres, stencil painted in Sophistication Metallic Emulsion, £16.99 for 2.5 litres, Crown. The stencil is available from The Stencil Library for £47.95.

Wall of storage

White storage can be so much more than just a practical option. Create a designer look with white gloss storage units across one wall of your room, and choose different combinations to fit your TV, hide away the clutter and display more interesting artefacts.

Colour your bathroom

Who said a bathroom has to be dreary beige? How about a splash of acid green to set off your white sanitaryware? You could even add bright pink tiles to your shower cubicle for an element of surprise in this scheme.

Helsinki Wall Tile Green, £52.76 per square metre, B&Q.

Magnetic memo boards

These magnetic boards are such fantastic value that you can afford to fill a whole wall. This way, you can keep your display flexible, and add or remove notes and pictures as and when you need. Beautiful and practical!

Spontan boards, £8.99 each, Ikea.

Group mirrors together

Be your own interior designer and group four pictures or mirrors together on one wall or for a real show-stopper. Hanging a wall of mirrors is perfect for small spaces too, as it will make the room feel twice the size.

Gatsby square mirrors, £225 each, Laura Ashley.

Cityscape mural

You can turn one wall into a reminder of somewhere special with a digital mural. Choose from dreamy ocean scenes or the rooftop view from a far flung place to whet your travel appetite.
